The Department of Civil Engineering at Don Bosco Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, was established in 2013 and offers a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Civil Engineering with an intake capacity of 60 students per academic year. The program is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, and the institution is affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, Karnataka.
From its inception, the department has been committed to fostering quality and excellence in engineering education. The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the best, in the vicinity, bestowed with highly qualified staff members and excellent infrastructure. Faculty receive sponsorship for research, including foreign travel for workshops, study leave for higher studies, and access to a campus bank, ATM, bus facility, and a research laboratory.
Department has sufficient classrooms and most of them are equipped with multimedia projectors. Department also has its exclusive Seminar Hall and several tutorial rooms. The department has eight well-equipped laboratories and each lab is equipped with computers, required software, hardware, instruments, and multimedia projectors.
Hands-on experience is provided to the students in all the areas of their curriculum such as Basic Materials Testing Lab, CADD Lab, Soil Mechanics Lab, Hydraulics and Fluid Machinery Lab, Strength of Materials Lab, Concrete and Highway Materials Lab, Survey Lab and Environmental Engineering Lab that have been provided with the modern and latest equipment.
The departmental library is available for providing quick access to faculty and students for referring text books, journals, digital resources like e-books, video lectures of NPTEL, and EDUSAT. It is stacked with more than 200 books and various Standards/Codes like IS Codes, IRC Codes, Handbooks.
Department of Information Science and Engineering offers Analog and Digital Electronics Laboratory in the 3rd semester. This is a basic laboratory in which students will learn the building blocks of the computer which include Logic Gates, Adders, Subtractors, Counters, Memory Units, Multiplexers, Encoders, Decoders, 555 Timer circuits, Waveform Generators, etc.
In this lab, students will be taught the development of programs using assembly and Embedded C language with ARM processors. Various Interfaces like Keyboard, LED, LCD, ADC, DAC, DC and Stepper Motors and Temperature Sensors are exercised with ARM Processors.
Computer Network Laboratory provides ample opportunity to learn the nature of network elements which include Hub and Switch, Bridge, Router, Repeater, Proxy, Firewall, Gateway. Students will be demonstrated the working of Internet protocols such as HTTP, TCP/IP, UDP, etc, and implementation of basic networking systems such as a client-server model using network simulator NS2.
The experiments conducted in Basic Materials Testing Laboratory are helpful to train the students in the testing of common materials used in construction and to study their behaviour under different types of loading. The results are useful to access their mechanical properties which are used in the design of structural elements.
In this lab, students are taught the procedure for testing the ingredients that are used to prepare concrete; the workability of green concrete, and its strength in the hardened state. Besides, they conduct the prescribed tests on road aggregates and bituminous materials used in highway construction. Students are guided to conduct the tests as per standard codal procedures and logically interpret the test results as per IS/IRC codes.

Surveying practice provides students with hands-on experience to supplement the instructions received in surveying courses. The surveying practice involves the use of a wide variety of modern surveying equipment, such as Total Stations, GPS-based surveying equipment, digital theodolites, and automatic levels for basic instructional and application purposes.
Surveying practice is aids in preparing maps and obtaining topographic information in both the horizontal and vertical planes for the planning and execution of all engineering projects.
In this lab, students are exposed to the testing of soil to determine its physical, index, and engineering properties. They are guided to conduct the tests as per Bureau of Indian Standard procedures for better understanding and for logically interpreting the results. The results are of prime importance in designing the appropriate type of sub-structures for various engineering projects.
This is a well – equipped laboratory with instruments of flow measurement and major hydraulic machinery. The instruments can be broadly classified as Pipe Flow Instruments, Open Channel Flow Instruments, and Hydraulic Machines. Some of the major equipment are Centrifugal Pump, Pelton Wheel Turbine, Kaplan Turbine, Francis Turbine, and Tilting Flume. Students are taught the applications of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and the operation of hydraulic machines.
This lab deals with the quality analysis of air, water, and wastewater. The testing is conducted by spectrophotometric and titrimetric methods as per the BIS Codes. The laboratory has sophisticated equipment like UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Spectrophotometer, BOD Incubator, COD Digester, and Turbidity Meter for accurate analysis of physical and chemical parameters in water and wastewater.
The laboratory is also equipped with instruments like Personal sampler and handy sampler for indoor and outdoor measurements of particulate and gaseous air pollutants. Students will be trained to conduct the experiments and interpret the results.
The CAD lab is well-equipped with advanced facilities such as the latest hardware and software, the latest visual aids, and plotting devices. In CAD lab, students are trained on 2D and 3D drafting of civil engineering elements using the current version of Auto CAD software. Also, they are taught the application of Staad Pro, ETABS, and SAP 2000 software in the design of structural elements.

The faculty is actively involved in several multi-faceted research and consulting activities with high relevance to industry and society. The department has been at the forefront in areas such as Concrete Technology, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Remote Sensing & GIS.
Concrete technology focuses on the study of concrete, its properties, composition and applications. Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials globally, valued for its versatility, durability, and cost-effectiveness. Concrete technology involves understanding the science and engineering behind the material to optimize its performance and develop innovative applications. Key aspects and research areas in concrete technology include mix design, special concretes, admixtures, NDT, rehabilitation of concrete structures and sustainable construction practices.
Research in structural engineering plays a vital role in advancing the field, making structures safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly. As new challenges and technologies arise, structural engineers continue to explore innovative solutions and interdisciplinary collaborations to shape the future of infrastructure design and construction. Research involves studying new materials, innovative structural analysis systems, seismic and wind-resistant designs.
Transportation research deals with the planning, design and operation of transportation systems, including roads, railways, airports and seaports. Areas of focus include pavement design and materials, traffic engineering and management, sustainable transportation, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and urban transportation planning.
Environmental engineers work on projects that address environmental protection, sustainability, and pollution prevention. Research in this field could explore wastewater treatment technologies, air quality improvement, waste management and sustainable water resources.
This area is concerned with the management and distribution of water resources, including river and coastal engineering, hydrology, flood management and water supply systems. Research involves water conservation, watershed modelling using GIS & Remote sensing and sustainable water resource planning.
It is a branch of civil engineering that deals with the behaviour of soils and rocks and their interaction with structures and infrastructures. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and stable design of foundations, slopes, excavations, and other geotechnical structures. Geotechnical engineers use principles of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and engineering geology to analyse and design engineering projects.
Remote sensing provides information in space and time and GIS techniques helps to store, interpret and retrieve spatial data. It is very essential for an inaccessible area. GIS is utilized to process spatial data to study the risk of Groundwater pollution. There are powerful spatial analysis software’s such as ArcGIS to process spatial data of water quality monitoring and maps using AI.

As prescribed by the VTU curriculum, the Department of Civil Engineering conducted the Survey Camp for the 3rd Year Students between 29.03.2021 and 12.04.2021 at Kempegowda Layout, Bengaluru, Karnataka. The students reported to the college by 9.00 A.M. everyday and collected the surveying instruments from the department. College buses were provided for ferrying the students, teachers and non-teaching staff memberes to the field. After completing the field survey work for the prescribed projects they would return to the campus at about 3.30 P.M.
This camp was an opportunity to groom students with essential knowledge and exposure to real world field work, and to inculcate leadership and teamwork skills. During the twelve days the students did the field work [on a very small scale] for following projects:
• New Tank and Canal
• Restoration of Old Tank
• Highway
• Water Supply and Sanitation
• Town Planning
As per the VTU curriculum Department of Civil Engineering conducted their Survey Camp for BE 3rd year students of Civil Engineering successfully from 04th Feb 2020 to 14th Feb 2020 at KAIWARA, Chikkaballapur District, Karnataka. Nine staff members and sixty-one students stayed at the camp for the duration of ten days.
This camp was aimed to groom civil engineering students with essential knowledge and exposure to the real work, and to encourage leadership and teamwork skills. Also the students were trained to use Total Station in addition to the conventional surveying instruments. This survey camp resulted in encouraging and supporting students in emerging as leaders in several aspects of their future career. Ten days camp was divided into various surveying projects such as
1. New Tank Project and Restoration of Old Tank Project
2. Highway Project
3. Water Supply and Sanitation Project
4. Town Planning Project.

Recognizing the need for hands-on training during the course work, Internship has been arranged for the students of the final year in various reputed organizations belonging to both Government and Private Sectors. Some of them are HAL, BBMP, Design Tree, Capacite Infraprojects Ltd, Allied Constructions Engineers, S R Construction Company, Sukuma Core Tech, Spoorthi Construction, Aravind and Rajan Construction, Civil Engineering Design, Mars Planning and Engineering Services Pvt Ltd, and Economic Reconstruction Agency, Bengaluru. A total of 56 students have benefited from the internship that they have undergone during this academic year. Similarly, a total of 58 students have benefited from the internship during the previous academic year.

Faculty receive sponsorship for research, including foreign travel for workshops, study leave for higher studies, and access to a campus bank, ATM, bus facility, and a research laboratory.
Department has sufficient classrooms and most of them are equipped with multimedia projectors. Department also has its exclusive Seminar Hall and several tutorial rooms. The department has eight well-equipped laboratories and each lab is equipped with computers, required software, hardware, instruments, and multimedia projectors.
Hands-on experience is provided to the students in all the areas of their curriculum such as Basic Materials Testing Lab, CADD Lab, Soil Mechanics Lab, Hydraulics and Fluid Machinery Lab, Strength of Materials Lab, Concrete and Highway Materials Lab, Survey Lab and Environmental Engineering Lab that have been provided with the modern and latest equipment.
The departmental library is available for providing quick access to faculty and students for referring text books, journals, digital resources like e-books, video lectures of NPTEL, and EDUSAT. It is stacked with more than 200 books and various Standards/Codes like IS Codes, IRC Codes, Handbooks.
Department of Information Science and Engineering offers Analog and Digital Electronics Laboratory in the 3rd semester. This is a basic laboratory in which students will learn the building blocks of the computer which include Logic Gates, Adders, Subtractors, Counters, Memory Units, Multiplexers, Encoders, Decoders, 555 Timer circuits, Waveform Generators, etc.
In this lab, students will be taught the development of programs using assembly and Embedded C language with ARM processors. Various Interfaces like Keyboard, LED, LCD, ADC, DAC, DC and Stepper Motors and Temperature Sensors are exercised with ARM Processors.
Computer Network Laboratory provides ample opportunity to learn the nature of network elements which include Hub and Switch, Bridge, Router, Repeater, Proxy, Firewall, Gateway. Students will be demonstrated the working of Internet protocols such as HTTP, TCP/IP, UDP, etc, and implementation of basic networking systems such as a client-server model using network simulator NS2.
The experiments conducted in Basic Materials Testing Laboratory are helpful to train the students in the testing of common materials used in construction and to study their behaviour under different types of loading. The results are useful to access their mechanical properties which are used in the design of structural elements.
In this lab, students are taught the procedure for testing the ingredients that are used to prepare concrete; the workability of green concrete, and its strength in the hardened state. Besides, they conduct the prescribed tests on road aggregates and bituminous materials used in highway construction. Students are guided to conduct the tests as per standard codal procedures and logically interpret the test results as per IS/IRC codes.

Surveying practice provides students with hands-on experience to supplement the instructions received in surveying courses. The surveying practice involves the use of a wide variety of modern surveying equipment, such as Total Stations, GPS-based surveying equipment, digital theodolites, and automatic levels for basic instructional and application purposes.
Surveying practice is aids in preparing maps and obtaining topographic information in both the horizontal and vertical planes for the planning and execution of all engineering projects.
In this lab, students are exposed to the testing of soil to determine its physical, index, and engineering properties. They are guided to conduct the tests as per Bureau of Indian Standard procedures for better understanding and for logically interpreting the results. The results are of prime importance in designing the appropriate type of sub-structures for various engineering projects.
This is a well – equipped laboratory with instruments of flow measurement and major hydraulic machinery. The instruments can be broadly classified as Pipe Flow Instruments, Open Channel Flow Instruments, and Hydraulic Machines. Some of the major equipment are Centrifugal Pump, Pelton Wheel Turbine, Kaplan Turbine, Francis Turbine, and Tilting Flume. Students are taught the applications of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and the operation of hydraulic machines.
This lab deals with the quality analysis of air, water, and wastewater. The testing is conducted by spectrophotometric and titrimetric methods as per the BIS Codes. The laboratory has sophisticated equipment like UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Spectrophotometer, BOD Incubator, COD Digester, and Turbidity Meter for accurate analysis of physical and chemical parameters in water and wastewater.
The laboratory is also equipped with instruments like Personal sampler and handy sampler for indoor and outdoor measurements of particulate and gaseous air pollutants. Students will be trained to conduct the experiments and interpret the results.
The CAD lab is well-equipped with advanced facilities such as the latest hardware and software, the latest visual aids, and plotting devices. In CAD lab, students are trained on 2D and 3D drafting of civil engineering elements using the current version of Auto CAD software. Also, they are taught the application of Staad Pro, ETABS, and SAP 2000 software in the design of structural elements.
