The Department of Chemistry was established in 2001 and has been devoted to teaching and advanced research in chemistry. The department has distinguished itself as a center for innovative and pioneering teaching and research in different fields of chemistry. It was elevated to the status of VTU Research Center in 2011 in recognition of its achievements in various fields and received sponsored projects from the VTU Research Grant and VGST. The major research efforts are focused on areas such as catalysis, reaction kinetics, corrosion, polymers, nanomaterials, and electrochemistry. To ignite the quest for chemistry and its versatile applications in the young minds of future engineers, the department organizes various activities such as guest lectures, quizzes, workshops, conferences, and seminars. To kindle interest and encourage prospective researchers in the fields of material science, the department successfully organized a two-day national seminar on “Recent Advances in Material Science” in 2011 and a two-day national conference on “Frontiers and Challenges in Chemistry” in 2013. Additionally, the department organizes an International Conference on Innovations and Challenges in Science and Technology every year. The faculty members in the department are actively involved in both teaching and research, contributing to the department’s reputation for excellence. They also collaborate with industry professionals and participate in global research initiatives, further enriching the academic environment. The department continuously seeks to expand its research facilities and update its curriculum to stay at the forefront of chemical sciences. It also emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary research and encourages students to engage in cutting-edge projects and collaborations.

Chemistry deals with the nature of substances and the generation of entirely new materials by their mutual reaction. To inculcate an academic and research culture, the Department regularly organizes Conferences, Seminars, Quiz Competitions, Industrial Visits, and Academic Talks by eminent scientists from universities/research institutes/industries. Curiosity-driven research remains our main strength, while many of our research groups are actively involved in solving problems that have direct and immediate relevance to industry and society. The department, which is a recognized VTU Research Centre, offers Ph.D. Programme in every domain of Chemistry. We are constantly on the lookout for bright young minds, who could join us in capacity of students, researchers, or faculty members. We shall be delighted to hear from you.

Infrastructure/Facilities

The department has well-ventilated classrooms and most of them are equipped with multimedia projectors. The department also has tutorial rooms, seminar hall and a virtual classroom. The department has well-equipped laboratories and each lab is equipped with the modern and latest equipment to provide good hands-on experience to students in all the areas of their curriculum and to facilitate research activities.

The Department library is equipped with more books which include University prescribed textbooks, reference textbooks, journals, and materials for general studies

The Engineering Chemistry Lab has a wide range of equipment. The well-ventilated and spacious lab is aptly arranged in a neat manner to accommodate 60 students at a time. The lab is aesthetically designed with proper safety measures. The objective of the course is to impart a practical approach to the various techniques used in engineering applications both qualitatively and quantitatively. The exclusive Research Lab is equipped with Sophisticated Equipment to promote and facilitate research

Chemistry Lab

MIS Lab also offers helps to train students on Microsoft Excel and Expert Certification by providing tutorials and sample problems aimed to assist in their analyzing tasks.

Research Areas

The Department of Chemistry is actively engaged in multi – faceted research and consulting activities with high relevance to industry andsociety. The research activities at the Department are supported by sponsored research projects and state-of-the-art research facilities that exist at the Department and Institute levels. The department is visited by experts, scientists, and industrialists. The faculty members of the department have published more than 50 Research Papers in International and National journals of repute and are actively involved in the research activities. The department has established a Biodiesel Production Unit in 2018. Also we have initiated the development of a Simarouba Park for the utilization of oil yielding trees.

Catalysis

Transition metal ions as catalysts, in many synthetic and redox reactions, have become imperative in the last few decades. Research into catalysis is a major field in applied chemistry, environmental, and medicinal sciences. Homogeneous catalysis is one of the most interesting fields of chemistry, especially for its mechanisms and kinetics. It provides an admirable opportunity for the study of molecular causes of reactivity, and the causes of reactions. The process is of immense practical importance as it leads to a better understanding of reactions involving metal ions with prospective Industrial Applications.

Nano Metal Oxides for Photocatalysis

Synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles is a remarkable significant field of material science due to its unique magnetic, electronic, bio-sensing, catalytic and biological applications. To tackle issues like Atmospheric Contamination, Water Pollution and Power Crisis, photocatalysis has gained an ever-increasing attention and progressively become an area of significant research . Heterogeneous Photocatalysis Development has been a successful approach to enhance the absorption of light through range of wavelengths and to discourage the recombination of charge-carriers.

Reaction Kinetics

Chemical kinetics is a branch of chemistry that deals with the study of the rate of chemical reactions and the mechanism by which they occur. The rate laws are of practical importance since they provide concise expressions for the course of the reaction and can be applied in calculating reaction times, yields, and optimum conditions. The application of reaction kinetics in organic chemistry is the most important step in the investigation of reaction mechanisms and the most prospective field of application is Pharmaceuticals .

Corrosion Characterization of MMC

Metal Matrix Composites are an important class of materials, which contain metal or alloy as matrix and a ceramic particulate or fibre or whiskers as reinforcements. Aluminium based Metal Matrix Composites exhibit enhanced corrosion resistance, reduced wear and advantageous mechanical properties.They are used for applications in Aerospace, Power Utility, Automotive, and the Armed Forces.

Research Initiatives

The Department of Chemistry was established in 2001 and has been devoted to teaching and advanced research in Chemistry. The department has distinguished itself as a Centre for innovative and pioneering teaching and research in different fields of Chemistry. It was elevated to the status of VTU Research Centre in 2011 in recognition of its achievements in various fields and received sponsored projects from VTU Research Grant and VGST. The major research efforts are focused on areas such as catalysis, reaction kinetics, corrosion, polymers, nanomaterials, and electrochemistry. To ignite the quest for chemistry and its versatile applications in the young minds of future engineers, the department organizes various activities such as guest lectures, quizzes, workshops, conferences, and seminars. To kindle the interest and encourage the prospective researchers in the fields of material science, the department successfully organized a two-day national seminar on “Recent Advances in Material Science” in 2011 and a two-day National Conference on “Frontiers and Challenges in Chemistry” in 2013. Additionally, the department organizes an International Conference on Innovations and Challenges in Science and Technology every year. The faculty members in the department are actively involved in both teaching and research, contributing to the department’s reputation for excellence. They also collaborate with industry professionals and participate in global research initiatives, further enriching the academic environment. The department continuously seeks to expand its research facilities and update its curriculum to stay at the forefront of chemical sciences. It also emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary research and encourages students to engage in cutting-edge projects and collaborations.
